Today on the Scroll: saying no to Giorgio; unloading Gothamist; dealing Death Row.
Band drops Giorgio Mammoliti gig [Toronto Star]: “I have no comment. Thanks for the call, anyway,” the mayoral candidate says in response to two of the three bands announced for his Rock Your Vote campaign concert, March 31 at the Tattoo Rock Parlour, pulling out once they learned what they were signing up for — led to believe the apparently generous compensation had something to do with Sheridan College. Two acts, The Darcys and Make Your Exit, have yielded the event to remaining group Rockyard. Mammoliti’s opposition to same-sex benefits during his time at Queen’s Park as an MPP for the NDP between 1990 and 1995 was specifically cited by The Darcys as their motivation for turning down the gig. And the incident gave longtime rival Rob Ford’s team an opportunity to test out their jokes-making on Twitter.
Local Blog Network Gothamist Being Bought By Cablevision’s Rainbow Media [paidContent]: Dream comes true for weblog publishers pretending to make aspiring journalist dreams come true: $5 to $6 million for a network of hyperlocal sites across America. Torontoist, which proprietorist Jake Dobkin was ready to shut down when it became clear that an international reach was of little value, was revived with its current publishers in a licensing deal. Cablevision owner James Dolan is not regarded as the brightest bulb among media moguls — although Rainbow Media has the cachet that comes with owning cable channels AMC, IFC and Sundance.
Rapper RBX Finally Speaks Out About The Current State Of Death Row Records [Hip Hop Press]: “I just have one thing I have to ask these guys. What tha [sic] f–k were you thinking … seriously?” asks the cousin of Snoop Dogg about the deal that brought the bankrupt gangsta rap record company to a Toronto investment bank now eager to unload it for costs incurred plus one dollar. “We all had a little bit of hope when this game started but due to the shananigans, optimism is dwindling. Word on the street in Southern Cal is that Lara Lavi, the woman these guys kicked out of the mix is seriously backed by new heavy hitters on Wall Street. I have received phone calls confirming Lavi has a new deal. I don’t know whether she on to something new or trying to buy back her company. I don’t know the woman but damn she is truly unfadeable.” [Previously on Mondoville]
