Poperatic twins eternally tormented by millennial ode to oral sex

Comments Off 23 November 2009

A record executive behind Justin Beiber, the new tween idol from Stratford, Ontario, was charged with endangering the welfare of children for refusing to tweet a request for 3,000 shrieking girls to disperse in a Long Island mall too mobbed for him to enter safely. But what happens when the mania subsides? Ryan and Dan Kowarsky, identical twin sons of a synagogue cantor, will be forever haunted online by their past indiscretions — not from a frat party photo on Facebook, but a song and video produced by Sony Music Canada, which gave them a deal after they crashed the reception area to audition on the spot. The resulting package was branded as b4-4. Today, ten years later, they were named “Hot Sluts Of The Day!” on profane celebrity humiliation blog Dlisted: “It’s like Hot Chicks with Douchebags: THE MUSICAL SPECTACULAR!” Inevitably, someone chimes in to point out that Ryan and Dan — minus their similarly bleached and tanned sidekick Ohad Einbinder — have spent the last few years in England pursuing a grown-up career as poperatic duo RyanDan. What they can’t escape is the legacy of a pop song with a chorus that begins, “If you get down on me I’ll get down on you.” And, for a fleeting moment in the spring of 2000, scandal-starved reporters were wondering how this got on the radio. “It’s a song about getting down with your friends, a summer anthem,” a record company spokeswoman told the National Post. The official story was that, unlike other boy bands of the era, the 20-year-olds in b4-4 were granted creative control — then Florida boy band mogul Lou Pearlman took an interest in them, around the time he was trying to salvage his empire through Ponzi schemes. Still, they can count on “Get Down” being vivisected every so often. Like a year ago, via Videogum: “WHY ARE THEY SINGING THIS SONG TO THAT LITTLE BOY? WHY ARE THEY GOING TO TAKE THAT LITTLE BOY TO PLACES HE ONLY THINKS ABOUT WHEN HE’S ASLEEP AT NIGHT? RUN! RUN AWAY, LITTLE BOY! RUN AWAY, EVERYONE!”
