Mondoville Daily Scroll: November 19

Comments 19 November 2009

Today on the Scroll: local rock ‘n’ roll Cinderella story wuz robbed; to tweet or not to tweet on Parliament Hill; local TV’s most passionate citizen activist ignored by broadcast executives; making average art out of Google Earth; and credit card courts teen vampire demographic for Christmas.

List of Oscar Docs Doesn’t Include Anvil! [New York Vulture]: A list of 89 eligible documentaries were narrowed down to 15 and — at least there’s more surprise over this omission than the snub of Michael Moore. Co-star of Anvil! The Story of Anvil, drummer Robb Reiner, was on Facebook sharing his feelings: “Hollywood just didn’t want it to happen, I always said they are all fake fucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” When explained by his publicist that Hollywood did want it to happen, just not geriatric Academy voters, Reiner was assuaged: “OK then i go blow another bowl … and hope they die soon!!!”

An off-the-cuff open letter to Charlie Angus [Chris Tindal]: New wave Member of Parliament goes on the record that he wants Twitter banned from the hands of his Commons colleagues “to save politicians from looking like idiots.” Tindal, a past Green Party candidate, fires back: “I’m surprised that anyone who believes in transparent and accountable democracy could conclude that a tool that ‘exposes’ a problem with how Parliament (doesn’t) work should be removed from the equation.” So heated was the aftermath of one MP tweeting an abstract observation about another one’s girth, existential Twitterer Bob Rae weighed in on the matter, even though he had nothing to say.

Day two in Gatineau: Pam Astbury, citizen presenter [via CARTT.ca]: The head of grassroots group Save Our CBC Kamploops travelled to the CRTC local TV hearings on her own dime, but the executives mostly avoided her intervention, reports Greg O’Brien from a near-empty room: “Here is someone so community-minded and thoughtful about local television, someone who flew across the country on her own dime that she should have gotten to go first, received top billing from every news outlet covering this hearing and given a standing ovation at the end.”

Down to Google Earth [Leah Sandals, NOW]: Three-star review of the exhibition by Eryn Foster and John van der Woude showing through next week at Gallery 44.

American Express to Roll Out the Red Carpet for Exclusive Gala Screening of The Twilight Saga: New Moon [press release]: “‘We are opening up access to The Twilight Saga: New Moon to give everyone the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be an American Express Cardmember,’ said David Barnes, VP Communications at American Express Canada.”
