Mondoville Daily Scroll: November 12

Comments Off 12 November 2009

Today on the Scroll: newest local top 40 jock brings his party from the U.S.A.; internet commenter legal issues aren’t so automatic in Canada; user-generated television can have cutbacks too; potential political candidate can’t shake stoner image; and Canada’s Next Top Model was way thin from birth.

Joey Brooks Resigns From Q102 Philly [FMQB]: Howard Stern once turned down a job at CHUM FM but they can still look south for DJs to shake up this city. There’s a video out there of Brooks talking to Miley Cyrus on the phone while pointing a microphone at her picture, asking her about what she plans to do after she turns 18 — with evidence like this, were he working in any other field, Brooks would probably have trouble crossing the border for a new job.

Following suits [NOW]: The mysterious tweet from blogTO regarding a local business allegedly suing the site for reader comments leads Joshua Errett to ponder the legal implications: “It’s a media law grey area that needs to become black and white very soon.” Sure, but Canada has no shield law, no safe harbour protection, no legal precedents regarding blog comments — and the cases cited in the column are purely American. Nice try, though!

Current TV Staff Suffer A “Major Bloodbath” As 80 Employees Lose Their Jobs [TechCrunch]: The cross-platform information network co-founded by Al Gore is “shifting away from short-form programming and daily in-house production” and into more outsourcing of 30-to-60 minute programs. Back in June, the CBC had their partnership with Current quietly rubber-stamped by the CRTC. Ironically, the Current channel crept into U.S. homes after a fire sale of Newsworld International — even though the user-generated concept was originally inspired by an ill-fated CBC project, ZeD.

The Interview: Ross Rebagliati [Maclean's]: Smoking gold medallist snowboarder, best known for testing positive for pot, gets a practice grilling after announcing his pursuit of the Liberal Party nomination in the federal riding currently represented by Stockwell Day. A sample: “Q: How are you making your living these days? A: [Laughs.] Good question!”

Camera loves Winnipeg winner [Toronto Star]: Maybe the 19-year-old champ of Canada’s Next Top Model, Meaghan Waller, can also run for Parliament someday? “Q: How do you stay so thin? A: I’m naturally thin. I was born three-and-a-bit months premature so I have like, a really high metabolism. I actually almost got my mother nearly arrested when I was 4 years old because some lady in Florida told the police and family and child (services) my mother was malnourishing me. I’ve always been thin and I eat what I want when I want.”

… and more all day today @mondoville.
