Corey Haim’s phone calls are coming from inside the house

Local hard-luck teen idol Corey Haim will be walking a red carpet in Hollywood next Monday for an actual feature film with his name at the top of the poster: American Sunset, shot last spring in New Brunswick, has him playing a man forced to endure a series of foreboding phone clues to set his loving wife free from kidnappers: “one wrong answer … one missed deadline … and the consequences will be fatal.” And what else is new? The world premiere at the Lammle Theatre in Santa Monica can be attended by fans for 10 bucks — which includes a meet-and-greet, autographed photo of the star and, for 10 bucks more, access to the post-screening party. Tied to the annual American Film Market conference, herding Haim’s most faithful followers can surely help sell this B-movie around the world, if not provide fodder for a reality show. But it’s been a long climb back for this Corey, who survived about 15 drug-addled years to be cast in a few recent straight-to-DVD offerings, even if Lost Boys: The Tribe only gave him a cameo appearance relative to Corey Feldman, and Kiefer Sutherland’s brother. Another outlet for Haim’s celebrity rehab, Shark City, a poker flick starring Vivica A. Fox, was shot in 16 days in summer 2008, with Toronto playing New York — good enough for it to be salvaged for a premiere on the beleaguered network Super Channel.
