Mondoville Daily Scroll: November 30

Comments 30 November 2009

Today on the Scroll: a klutzy fan dancer could become the next Star Wars Kid; the market corrects club district hysteria; more chronicles of a supposedly hip suburban homebuyer; gentrified greasy spoon never stops disappointing; and one final blast of new media conference tweets for 2009.

Lady Gaga in Toronto 11/28/09: A faceplant at the 30 second mark makes rogue voguers waiting for the Saturday night concert a viral favourite, followed by even more drunken antics, among the 330 videos uploaded to YouTube after the Air Canada Centre show that was officially off-limits to media — just like the previous evening in Montreal, leading Steve Faguy to think thoughts to be thunk about “Lady Gaga and the media-celebrity relationship.” Who needs a press box when you’ve got a steady stream of fawning tweets? But the lack of media guest list wasn’t a social media strategy so much as a way to help Gaga find footing as a headline act for her tour’s first three Canadian dates.

CiRCA Filing for Bankruptcy? [BlogTO]: The nightclub where Lady Gaga made her Toronto debut a year ago just ain’t happening after notorious New York nightlife legend Peter Gatien left the scene he entered with such fanfare in October 2007, amidst protestations led by Councillor Adam Vaughan. The battle to open this Walmart of downtown partying in a congested district even provided grist for a documentary, Clubland. And now, what happens in suburbia is increasingly staying in suburbia.

The 905: Come on up and see me some time [Kim Izzo, Toronto Star]: Second of a series in the Star’s long-overdue idea of a Sex and the City-style column — editorial accompaniment to those adverts for suburban subdivisions: “My boyfriend was right. I could no longer walk to a café, because there was no café within walking distance.”

I’m Done with Lakeview Lunch [Stillepost.ca]: Burger at revived retro diner served on rye bread, leading suburban refugees to question the authenticity they’re being sold, although there is always a sense of social redemption: “I was there last night. food was mediocre. having a default place to drunkenly runn into friends at three in the morning is ok though.”

Free vs. paid content online [Digital Journal]: First liveblog of the day as laptops are fired up for panel after panel after panel at nextMedia, a conference over the next two days at the Design Exchange, culminating in Tuesday night’s Canadian New Media Awards. Those feeling left out in the cold can smoke that hashtag.
