Mondoville: the week up on the catwalk without any pants
Not unlike the Daily Scroll now happening here each morning, some late-breaking @mondoville stuff trending into the weekend, plus some posts of note you might have missed along the way.
Hanging Out @ Fashion Week [Moses Znaimer's Blog]: “Amid all the striving and pretension of a high fashion industry trying to root itself in Canada’s unglamorous soil, it was refreshing to see clothes characterized by optimism and fun.” He’s referring to Joe Fresh, whose style show featured the daughter of Keith Richards, and considerable pantslessness geared to showing off what kind of clothing can be bought in a supermarket. Perfect for a mature media mogul courting a new advertiser! “I thought a few of the yellow numbers for women were especially fetching, while the menswear, though modeled by boys, was accessible by Zoomers like me.”
News of Iran’s Detained ‘Blogfather’ [The Lede, New York Times]: Hossein Derakhshan, who tweaked Blogspot to incorporate Persian characters from his home in Toronto, thus initiating a mini-revolution, was arrested last year after returning to Iran, charged with spying on Israel after a trip he chronicled online. The father of the blogger best known as “Hoder” has written an open letter to the new head of Iran’s judiciary regarding his imprisoned son.
John Irving on John Irving on John Irving [The Globe and Mail]: Weekend paper profile tied to the International Festival of Authors, where the former occasional Torontonian reads on Sunday from Last Night in Twisted River. The writer protagonist, exiled in this city, drowns his sorrows at a restaurant called Kiss of the Wolf — a stand-in for Irving’s old Rosedale hideout Pastis Express.
Malcolm Gladwell on the Secret of Success [The Leonard Lopate Show, WNYC]: Customary appearance for all famous Manhattanite authors, where Gladwell explains he has no problem getting trust of New Yorker article subjects: “I don’t write about people in a way that makes them look bad,” he says. “It would be different if I was Kitty Kelley or something.” The same day, however, the NYT was discreetly making fun of Gladwell’s style. Political TV viewing habits [Susan Delacourt, Toronto Star]: Stephen Harper revelation that he would rather not watch himself on the nightly news results in mini-mania to find out media consumption patterns on Parliament Hill. Bob Rae finds the Prime Minister’s disclosure “quite shocking,” since he watched the news as much as an NDP premier as he does today as a Liberal MP. Rae reads the newspapers, too! Still? “Well, look at the colour of my hair. Of course I still do.”
