As tweeted first via @mondoville, the third CFRB morning man in 63 years, conservative ranter Bill Carroll, will be shifted to the 9 a.m.-1 p.m. time slot — replaced by current afternoon drive host, and unrepentant liberal, John Moore. Moore (pictured), a former improv comic who broke into Montreal radio to report on the fruits of free movie passes, is being called up the clock to save 1010 from ratings oblivion. This after initial Portable People Meter measurement confirmed that the ratings for open-line AM radio might be getting kinda dire when every wingnut can have a website. Moreover, the Toronto Sun notes that long-suffering AM 640 have trended better in the PPM results. But who ever thought speak-your-mind broadcasting could survive in any form past 2010? For that reason, a re-branding to Newstalk 1010 is imminent, and heritage handle CFRB phased out of public identification. The host getting the most out of the shuffle by taking over the 4-7 p.m. shift, past and future mayoral candidate John Tory, also has the most sentimental ties to the “Canada’s First Rogers Batteryless” call letters — he got his first broadcasting job as a teenage newsman in 1971 on the pop station Ted Rogers launched, 680 CFTR, to replace the one that got away from his dad. Presumably, the new assignment for Moore is meant to bring 1010 back to a friendlier disposition in mornings: Wally Crouter, who held the position from 1946 through 1996 was initially replaced by Ted Woloshyn, involuntarily shuffled out in late 2006 as the Allan Slaight-family-owned station changed hands to Astral Media in a billion-dollar deal. Woloshyn’s severance likely ended last month when he used space in the Sun to “clear the air.”
